Cocaine Seizure at Itaqui Anchorage Highlights the Critical Role of Maritime Surveillance

The first frame reveals the concealed packages of cocaine hidden in a forward compartment of the ship, stacked alongside lifebuoys. The second frame displays multiple drug packages securely wrapped in plastic, placed on the deck after their discovery. The third frame provides an aerial view of the bulk carrier JAWOR anchored off the coast, where the Federal Police conducted the inspection leading to the drug bust.

The Cocaine Seizure at Itaqui Anchorage

In the early hours of Saturday, October 5th, the Federal Police conducted the largest seizure of cocaine hydrochloride ever recorded in the state of Maranhão. During the operation, 500 kg of the substance were found in the forward hold of the bulk carrier M/V JAWOR, flying the flag of the Bahamas. The vessel was anchored near the Port of Itaqui, São Luís, in preparation for docking and loading soybeans for transportation to the Port of Cartagena, Spain.

The drug was discovered during a routine inspection conducted by Federal Police agents, who boarded the vessel and carried out a thorough search. It is suspected that the cocaine was loaded with possible assistance from crew members while the JAWOR was anchored. An investigation has been launched to further probe the origin and intended destination of the shipment, and the crew will be interrogated to determine their level of involvement.
